What Is Biological Age, and How Is It Different From Your Real Age?

Your driver’s license says one thing. Your cells may say another.

What is chronological age?

Chronological age is simply how many years you’ve been alive. It’s fixed – it moves in one direction, one year at a time, and nothing you do changes it.

What is biological age?

Biological age is an estimate of how old your body appears to be at the cellular level, based on measurable markers in your blood. Two people can both be 55 years old chronologically while their bodies show very different levels of wear – one may test closer to 48, the other closer to 62. Lifestyle, sleep, stress, nutrition, and activity all leave a signature.

How is biological age measured?

The most studied approach is epigenetic testing. It looks at DNA methylation – chemical tags on your DNA that shift in patterns as the body ages. By reading those patterns from a small blood sample, a lab can produce an estimated biological age. At BAR Labs in Boca Raton, the blood sample is taken at our office, and your results are reviewed with you by David Soria, M.D.

Can biological age change?

Unlike chronological age, biological age is a measured number – and a number you can retest. That’s the premise BAR Labs is built on: establish your starting point, follow a physician-managed plan, then retest and see where the number goes. We treat reversing your biological age as a goal we measure against, not a guaranteed outcome.

Why does biological age matter?

It gives you something chronological age never can: a baseline you can act on and track. Instead of guessing whether your health habits are working, you have a before-and-after number.
